The President & Director is the Chief Executive Officer of the Center, serves as its principal public spokesperson and philanthropic fundraiser, and provides vision and leadership for its outstanding interdisciplinary staff team. Reporting to a 22-member Board of Directors and serving as member of that Board, the President & Director leads a staff of 50, including 15 Principal Investigators working on programs and initiatives around the world.

    SUMMARY: The Woods Hole Research Center seeks a Post-Doctoral Researcher to work on an NSF-funded project investigating controls on the flux, age, and composition of terrestrial organic carbon exported by major global rivers to the ocean. This is a collaborative project involving scientists from the Woods Hole Research Center, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the University of New Hampshire, and elsewhere. Rivers/watersheds that are part of the study include the Congo, Ganges, Yangtze, Brahmaputra, Fraser, and rivers in Siberia. The position will be based at the Woods Hole Research Center, in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, but it is essential that candidate be available for extended travel to remote international locations.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Assist with project coordination, sampling (particularly for the Congo and Siberian rivers), and data analysis
    • Lead in presentation and publication of scientific results

    QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

    • PhD in a relevant field and background in biogeochemistry required; experience with carbon cycling and transport in rivers/watersheds desired
    • Experience with hydrology, remote sensing and GIS, biogeochemical modeling, and land-ocean connections desired
    • Knowledge of Russian or French desired
    • Highly collaborative, flexible, organized, and efficient
    • Excellent writing and communication skills (writing samples will be required)

    Post-Doctoral Researcher – Amazon Ecosystem Modeling, Job #PDMC02

    SUMMARY: A three-year position that reports to the Principal Investigator, Amazon Savannization Project. The scientist will join an international science team that uses numerical models, field experiments, and satellite applications to investigate the impacts of land use/land cover changes and climate variability on the water, energy, and carbon cycles of the Amazon River basin. The primary duties of the position will be to apply and expand existing ecosystem and climate models to evaluate the sensitivity of Amazon terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems to the effects of rapid agricultural expansion. The position will be based at the Woods Hole Research Center but will also participate in a large existing field and numerical modeling program based in Brazil. See more program details »

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Coordinate projects modeling the effects of deforestation on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems in the Amazon
    • Participate in a larger project quantifying human influences in the Amazon
    • Evaluate and incorporate new field data within existing models
    • Lead and participate in scientific publications
    • Other tasks as agreed upon in the course of the research

    QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

    Education: Researchers with a doctoral degree in ecosystem dynamics, ecology, atmospheric sciences or related field are encouraged to apply.

    Skills: Numerical modeling, ecological applications, data management. Fluency or desire to learn Portuguese is preferred.
