Going with the Flow: A River-Centric View of Our Changing Planet

Drawing on examples from around the world, Senior Scientist Dr. Max Holmes used stunning photographs, compelling video, and maps to show that just as human health can be evaluated by analyzing the blood, so can the health of watersheds can be evaluated by monitoring river water. He has studied many of the world’s largest rivers, including the Amazon, Congo, and Kolyma, and much of this work is motivated by an interest in understanding the causes and consequences of global climate change. Dr. Holmes will emphasize the implications of permafrost thaw in the Arctic and deforestation in the tropics.
