Making a PledgeYou may confirm your intentions by a letter to Mary Loftus at the address given above. Pledges may be fulfilled monthly, semi-annually or annually. Making a Gift of SecuritiesSignificant tax advantages usually accrue to outright gifts of appreciated securities; the capital gains tax is eliminated, and the donor is entitled to a deduction equal to the fair market value of the securities. Because of tax considerations, it is usually beneficial to contribute securities directly to The Woods Hole Research Center rather than selling them and giving the proceeds of the sale. Contact the Office of Development for instructions on the transmittal of a gift of securities: 508/540-9900 x153. Matching GiftsMany corporations now offer programs that will match or multiply an employee's gift. However, you must obtain the matching gift form from your employer. Separately Invested TrustsThese permit a donor to create a charitable remainder trust to provide either a variable (unitrust) or fixed income (annuity trust). A unitrust pays the beneficiary a fixed percentage of the market value of the trust as determined annually. An annuity pays a specified dollar amount each year. Minimum gift: $100,000. Life InsuranceAs the years go by, the need for life insurance to protect your family frequently decreases. You might consider putting a life insurance policy to work for the Woods Hole Research Center. Your gift of a policy results in an immediate charitable deduction for the amount of the cash surrender value. Your estate will benefit as well, as the proceeds of a donated policy are not included in your taxable estate. Real EstateHighly appreciated real estate is a tremendous asset. Donors of real estate usually enjoy significant tax benefits. You can make an outright gift of land, a farm, a vacation home or your residence. Personal PropertyGifts of tangible personal property--such as antiques, rare books, works of art - can be transformed into a valuable asset for the Woods Hole Research Center. Gifts-in-KindGifts of services, materials, or equipment will enable the Center to redirect other resources for maximum benefit. |
